Driving Test: To Text
Boulder, CO, Department of Motor Vehicles has sanctioned texting and driving. Drivers must pass the Text-to-Drive-Test. A spokesperson announced via text:
"It is our thinking that we begin to listen to our community, to watch their actions. People text and drive. It's a product of our society. Alas we must accommodate our drivers by seeing that they are prepared to text and drive."
Drivers are only allowed to text during the following instances:
A) At red lights and stop signs.
B) In areas where the speed limit is less than 65 miles per hour.
C) Seniors are refrained from drexting.
D) Teens under seventeen are refrained from drexting.
To accommodate drexting--driving and texting--traffic lights are installed with sounds in order to notify drivers for when to conclude their texting. There are warnings for twenty seconds remaining, etc. "We wouldn't want drivers to have to look up at the annoying red light to only learn that the light is still red; our mission is for drivers to feel safe and uninterrupted to complete texts."
The city of Boulder has extended red lights to permit drivers to complete extended texts. Traffic lights are attached with signage denoting the length of the light. Twenty minutes is the longest time for a traffic light.
We at the DMV are certain that drivers will be downright gracious about the opportunity to complete those pesky work texts before arriving home. We anticipate that drivers will seek out the five minute red lights to complete these texts."
Elaine Epstein, 25, was one of the many drivers who stood in line to obtain texting license.
"I was texting my friends, while standing in line and smoking a cigarette. And it was easy enough. But I'm now curious about my Volvo; it's a straight shift. How am I supposed to smoke my cigarette and text at the same time. And drive. This is too much. They are going to have to accommodate for me as well. Perhaps....I don't know....the state can provide a voucher for me to get an automatic car."
Rolly Goeth pointed out via sign language that he advocates this law as well though he'd prefer to receive a text to learn if it is time to conclude his text. He signaled that this discriminates deaf people.
Of course, hearing and deaf people should be allowed to drext.
